Yet another “If only we could tell them the liberal position” idiot
June 28, 2007 by scrubone
Actually, that title is a bit harsh. These are just young kids. They have no idea how stupid they’re being.
The three students who were interviewed - Mari Oye, Leah Anthony Libresco, and Colin McSwiggen, all recently-graduated high school students, were among the one-third of the Presidential Scholars who signed a letter asking President Bush, among other things, “to do all in your power to stop violations of the human rights of detainees, to cease illegal renditions, and to apply the Geneva Convention to all detainees, including those designated enemy combatants.”
This made me laugh:
“And you want to talk about brain power, the collective group that you’re seeing there. Mari and Leah going to Yale next year, Colin accepted to MIT.”
Bush went to Harvard and Yale. I’m guessing no one told the kids that…
So the kids go on to say their piece.
We brought up some very specific points in the letter about the treatment of detainees, even those designated as enemy combatants, and we strongly believe that all of these detainees should be treated, according to the principles of the Geneva Convention. So, this was a very specific point.
Unfortunately, their elders have again not pointed out the error of their ways. Terrorists are excluded in several different ways from coverage under the Geneva Convention. While that might not worry the average punter, a president under pressure from all sides (as all presidents are) isn’t going to change any positions based on the opinions of people who haven’t even done enough basic homework to argue against his true current position.
But here’s the part that really generates the title…
ROBERTS: Well, let me point out — your mother was a presidential scholar…
OYE: Yes.
ROBERTS: …met Lyndon Johnson back in 1968, I believe…
OYE: Yes.
ROBERTS: …and said that she always regretted not saying something to him about the Vietnam war.
OYE: Absolutely. And that’s something that weighed heavy on my mind, and I wanted to think about how we would feel 40 years from now if we had the opportunity to speak, and also the privilege to speak to the President of the United States, and to not use that privilege in order to make a difference.
Lyndon Johnson, good ole LBJ.
LBJ as in “hey, hey, LBJ, How many kids did you kill today”.
That would be the LBJ who was hounded out of office, by protesters telling him every day what they thought of his policies. By screaming at the top of their lungs outside his window.
Yep. Just one more would have done it.

Actually terrorists ARE covered by the GC and Rules of Land Warfare conventions.
They’re entitled to sumary execution.
By international law.
You’re getting a lot of milage out this category aren’t you. I should have charged royalties.
Man, I am so sick of these naive kids wanting America to return to the days when we adhered to the Geneva Conventions!!! A little thing called 9/11 happened, in case they’ve forgotten! If we’re ever to eradicate the people responsible for terrorist acts, we HAVE to sink much, much lower morally and ethically! That’s just a fact!
Sure, it would be great if America could return to having the moral high ground in the world, but let’s be serious - when you have the strongest military on earth, why the hell should we do what’s “morally” right or adhere to those silly outdated Geneva Conventions?? Does anyone deny that terrorism is the greatest threat this nation ever faced? If so, then maybe you should stop reading about those so-called “graver threats” we faced and overcame without sinking to torture, and get on board with a leader who, while unaware of our nation’s history, at least isn’t afraid to order when mass-murder when he sees the potential financial rewards it can reap!
America might be nuked someday. That would be horrible. A lot of people still think that the US is a world economic power but it isn’t really. The real power and wealth may have been shifted already, to contries such as China and Russia.
Anderson Alba - I’d settle for people like you reading them.
Jane - a major US city being nuked is regarded by the insurance industry as a certainty - when not if.
China may become a bigger economy, but I recall reading somewhere that at current rates of growth that actually won’t happen as soon as most people think.
As for Russia, they’re actually on the way out if anything. Only their oil is keeping them going.
Is the whole country being nuked regarded by the insurance industry as a certainty also?
