Listening to the 5pm news on the way home.. not one peep could I hear of the Herald’s current top story.
New Zealand First received a large mystery donation in December last year but Party president Dail Jones does not know whether wealthy expat businessman Owen Glenn gave it
Sort of funny how our government is mired in a deepening corruption scandal (and far from the first) and goverment radio ignores it.
Yes, Funny that.
Update: It’s the 8th story on their news page, and it’s woefully out of date.
National says Labour Party president Mike Williams should be investigated over his handling of an interest free loan.
Mr Williams has said Labour did not receive any donations from ex-patriate businessman Owen Glenn after the 2005 election.
But Mr Glenn gave the party a $100,000 interest free loan in December 2006, the foregone interest of which is considered a donation under the Electoral Finance Act.
National Party deputy leader Bill English says the matter should be investigated to ensure that the credibility of the law is reinforced.
In a statement, the Labour Party says Mr Williams’ comment was an honest mistake for which he has apologised and was not an attempt to cover any contributions.
The party’s general secretary says at the time the loan was made a market rate was established for the foregone interest, so that it could be declared in Labour’s return of donations for 2007 - which is due in April.
In Parliament on Wednesday, Mr English asked Justice Minister Annette King if the matter would be investigated.
Ms King said enforcement of the Electoral Finance Act is not a matter for her to decide.
