China’s human rights record worsened in some areas in 2008, the US state department concluded in its annual report on rights around the world.
Gee, I wonder what gave that away? Maybe the way that the government controlled virtually everything it could to make the “perfect” Olympics?
There were even cases of foreign reporters harassed and arrested for being in the “wrong” places.
Far from creating greater openness, China cracked down on any “undesirable” groups during the games to get them out of the road. People were turfed out of their homes in order to make way for the facilities.
