This month’s rankings are over the break.
Alexa = Alexa ranking
NZ ranking = Alexa NZ ranking
Technorati.com authority score (1 if none)
HD Score calculated Alexa*AlexaNZ/Authority/10000. Greens blog multiplied by 80.
All data was downloaded this evening.
Notes:
1. The criteria here are looser than Tumeke! Generally we are more relaxed, and include all blogs that post items interesting to the general public. This is pretty much most things outside of strictly “this is what I did today” style blogs. We also include blogs that are defunct, as many still are read for months after closing.
2. If you have asked and have not been included, or know of a blog that’s not here please feel free to let me know – politely! I keep thinking I have lost things but not finding them… so if I’ve missed you let me know. Ditto for classifications.
3. There are no prizes for asking why frog blog is “out of place”. Because the blog is only part of that site, I cannot justify calculation on the same basis as blogs that are the sole feature of their site. Strictly speaking, it should be on the “cannot calculate” list. Update: The Frog score is now multiplied by 7, ans this appears more fair, based on their Tumeke! score and Authority.
4. I’ve updated which blogs are defunct
5. The “can’t calculate” list has now caught up with the rest and now formats the same – previously only colours and christian blogs showed properly.
6. Finally, we have a key!!
7. Update: I noted some issues with the authority score last month, and it was pointed out that The Standard’s score was wrong this month. I have checked the blogs with higher Alexa numbers and a authority of manually, and corrected both TS and Catus Kate. Some rankings are now different because of this and the update on No. 3.
8. Update: I have noticed that Christian blogs have risen up these rankings over the last few months. I don’t know why. The data here gathered as objectively as possible and is posted promptly, and can be verified by anyone who wishes to (and corrected by myself). I suspect that the MandM Christian rankings have played a part in encouraging christian blogs to link to each other, and encouraged christians who read one of these blogs to read others, and this has helped push up scores.
9. Update: Tumeke! rankings updated to the latest numbers, which were late this month.
Note: Original Blog list, and original concept from Tumeke, who have a more considered ranking of the NZ blogosphere here. No Hamsters were harmed in the compiling of these statistics, just egos!

Comments on: "May Halfdone New Zealand Blog Stats" (14)
The Standard has a Technorati authority of 105, not 1 (http://technorati.com/blogs/www.thestandard.org.nz?reactions)
Frogblog is a blog proper so should be counted like all the others. Why are you not excluding Catholic blogs becasue they belong to the Pope, if you want to be fair?
Also, the queer symbol is upside down. The Nazis got it right, why can’t you?
Hm, there were some problems with the a Technorati authority data last time – I clearly should have checked more carefully.
This formula really only works if the data sources resolve for the blog alone. Frogblog resolves to the green party website. Common sense dictates that a lot of people visit the Greens site who are not interested in blogs, and this drives their ranking up. In other instances that doesn’t make much difference but in the Green’s case it puts them into the no.2 place usually, something that isn’t justified. Like I have said before, if someone has a better idea I’m all ears. I have to say that I don’t get you catholic dig – who writes frogblog or who it belongs to has nothing to do with it.
As for the queer symbol, clearly I’m not a Nazi
I’ll look at fixing it now that the issue is pointed out.
Technorati is majorly screwed at the moment. There is no way the Technorati score you have used for MandM is correct as it is lower than last months yet we have only just now crossed the 6 month mark so it cannot be drop offs and I am aware of at least half a dozen additional links that we picked up this month. The sooner Technorati sort out their colo move problems the better.
BTW We too have noticed a lot of Christian blogs ranking higher – not just on your rankings but also on Tumeke’s. I think you are correct, I think that by gathering them together they are each getting more traffic and of course they are all discovering each other and linking to each other.
Hi there,
To use a cricket analogy, using Alexa to rank sites is like using ‘Duckworth Turner’ to decide a cricket match – every game.
A team that scores more runs, can lose & frequently will.
Here’s the deal, showing-you how flawed Alexa (which I don’t happen to subscribe to, by the way) is.
1.)In May I had 5,907 visitors, up 24% from April – yet according to the marvels of Alexa, I’ve slipped down 25% odd.
2.)I am ranked 111th with 5,907 visitors in May, yet the 41st blog got just 1,765.
3.)In April I got 4,505 visitors and M+M got 4,535 – just 1 a day more. According to Alexa, they are a top ten blog-site in New Zealand, and I was a 70 some-thing.
The bottom dollars is: I don’t care how I score my runs!
I can snick-it-through the slips ten times, be dropped twenty times, on my way to making a century.
The fact is I made the runs, as per the scoreboard & the only scoreboard worth publishing is the site numbers.
I don’t care how people got to my blog, links, rss subscriptions, the incestuous Alexa or Technorati.
Visitors can be naked when they read my blog, live in Sibeia, hate my guts (3 death threats and counting) – I don’t give a rats arse – the fact is they arrived at my site.
All that counts is the statistics (runs) not this Alexa cobblers.
If sites choose to hide their stats, just simply don’t include them, rather than come-up with a convoluted ranking systems which is frankly highly flawed.
Cheers.
Paul.
Paul – I am posting my “NZ blog sitemeter ranking – May ‘09″ tomorrow am. This certainly shows that Canterbury Atheist has moved up dramatically – confirming your experience.
Sitemeter stats really show that indices like Alexa & Technorati are really no good at rating blogs on a monthly basis. And we shouldn’t expect them to as they are averaged over 3 monthly or six monthly periods. Many people suspect their reliability on other grounds as well. That is why I have gone for an aggregate of 11 indices, to try and overcome the individual quirks.
When I looked at the April sitemeter stats (see Ranking NZ blogs with sitemeter data) I found that the individual ranking indices only had a predictive power (for visit numbers) of 50% or less. Halfdone’s ranking predicted 52%, Tumeke’s 54% and Open Parachute total rank 60% (or 63% for the aggregate of 4 ranking indices – Alexa, Technorati, Alexa NZ and Google Pagerank).
So, while I think there is some use for these aggregate rankings perhaps they should be seen more on a quarterly, six-monthly or even yearly-basis. And even then restriction to just a few ranking indices brings in more distortion. I suspect that monthly concentration on these rankings may just be bringing them into disrepute as the violate individual bloggers’ experiences.
It would be much more useful if more blogs made their sitemeter stats available or public. The resulting monthly ranking would be more meaningful. But even for those who don’t wish to make their stats available to existence of a limited monthly list enables them to evaluate how well they are doing in the NZ blogosphere.
I would be interested in feedback about the usefulness of a monthly sitemeter stats ranking list, and whether the current ranking lists may not be serving their purpose.
Gidday there Ken,
If you do a google on ‘Christian Music Sucks’, a blog I did last year comes-up near the top ( it’s been a popular page of mine for ages)
By the way, the appeal of yours/my sites is largely universal, so we are not reliant on a New Zealand audience, but moving-on, and back to this vexed subject.
Using my example, anyone who does/dosen’t think ‘Christian Music Sucks’ and mildly interested, is likely to at least read my article (one of my better ones in terms of employing satire to get my point across – even if, I do say so myself!)
But according to Alexa, Technorati and similar, it’s HOW that person came to my site, that’s important – not why they came, or even the fact they arrived in the first place.
I repeat my analogy using Cricket terms.
A flowing off-drive to the boundary, results in a four.
A lucky snick through slips, results in four runs.
The scorer puts 4 in the book regardless of the circumstance, he doesn’t mark it down as say it worthy of just 1 because it was a false stroke, or in blog terms the viewer came from a source not related to the company like Alexa, who wants every blog to encompass their software.
Measuring a batsman’s ability is done on their runs – not their strokes.
Measuring blog stats is done on visitors – not their referrals or subscribers
There’s no other way around it.
If you believe Alexa and Teachnorati, rss subscriptions, links, system employed in this table(above), my blog is 111th – yet the fact remains it receives 3.3 times the visitors than the 41st site.
So unequivocally this Alexa ‘system’ is highly inaccurate, to the point it is irrelevant, as it misses the single piece of statistical information that counts.
The number of visitors.
The true measure is the one you will be publishing shortly = sitemeter number of visitors.
Cheers.
Paul.
Oh yeah, whilst eating my lunch, something else came to mind.
Another reason why this ludicrous Alexa/Subscriptions/Colour of your under-pants, erroneous measuring-stick – should cease.
Imagine if I did not have any site meter/counter on my site, and I relied on Tables like this the sole measuring-stick.
With that in mind, I arrived here, only to find that (a.) I’m ranked 111th having fallen 40 places in the last 30 days (b.) 25 per cent less people in May viewed my site than in April.
Disheartening stuff.
When in reality the truth of the matter is both those statistics are not just false they are misleading and potentially damaging.
Let’s not invent inaccurate systems (per above) to get around the fact some sites choose not to use site-meters.
See ya.
Paul.
“Another reason why this ludicrous Alexa/Subscriptions/Colour of your under-pants, erroneous measuring-stick – should cease. ”
Sorry, I need another 3 essay-length comments before I do that.
“I found that the individual ranking indices only had a predictive power (for visit numbers) of 50% or less.”
So?
The point here isn’t that a blog is widely read – it’s that it’s a good blog according to various measures that are available.
“it’s that it’s a good blog according to various measures that are available.” – I agree. But it does raise the question about what measure to use and some justification for the choice. A reason why I have tried to include separate ratings for links and RSS subscriptions – which I think the thoughtful blogger may actually be more interested in the Alexa/Technorati.
I suspect most bloggers see a ranking and (especially if it is favourable to their blog) don’t give a stuff about what it really represents. But a couple are definitely complaining that they prefer to see something at least related to their visit stats.
How you classify my blog is up to you, but might I suggest that, since I’m on record as favouring the legalisation of P, the abolition of the police, and an end to criminal law, “Libertarian” might be a more appropriate designation for Mulholland Drive than “Right Leaning”?
Heh, will correct that one, cheers.
