Honestly, if I read more left-wing blogs I’d never get any work done. I saw this nasty little post on No Right Turn the other day and it occurred to me that the Weatherston case is a great example of a vicious murder who could be executed without any moral qualms of innocence.
The Sensible Sentencing Trust has finally dropped the mask, and is now openly advocating the death penalty:
Is it time we had a debate on what is an appropriate sentence for the likes of Baker and other murderers, current law means they will come up for parole and possibly released.I am sure most New Zealanders would like to ensure that these Evil killers never walked the streets again. There is only two ways to ensure that, either introduce the death penalty or a TRUE LIFE sentence so they are never released.
Yes, someone in the SST has suggested that the worst killers either are locked up for their entire lives or are executed. Wait, that’s hardly “dropping the mask” – and it’s perfectly consistent with their policy.
So, they plan to show that killing people is wrong, by… killing people! Yeah, that’ll get their point across.
Someone ought to point out to I/S what NZ’s current punishments for serious criminals are.
I’m pretty sure a private person locking someone in a cell for years at a time would attract significant police attention. Executing someone for murder is no more immoral or illogical than locking someone up for kidnapping. The key is not the method of punishment necessarily, but the context in which it happens.
The death penalty is fundamentally immoral. It serves no deterrent purpose, but is merely a sadistic act of revenge.
Once again, I/S decides that actions by a private person are exactly the same morally than those of an impartial justice system.
The death penalty might not stop murders, but it sure stops repeat offending by the offender. Which is what the original article is about – stopping future crime.
It has no place whatsoever in any civilised society. As for the “Sensible” Sentencing Trust, they have once again shown that they are nothing but vicious, vengeful hypocrites, who think that killing is bad when it happens to them, but fine if they get to do it to others.
Ian Ashley’s media release uses the words “Evil killers” that’s about as bad as it gets. I’d say he’s earnt the right to say so, given his sons death.
Idiot/Savant does a great job savaging a victim of violent crime.
“vicious, vengeful hypocrite” – hm.

What’s his stance on abortion again?
On assisted suicide?
On euthanasia?
Killing is wrong, no exceptions, except for his own list of exceptions.
