About 5 years ago, I started reading the New Zealand Herald. I immediatly noticed a rather massive mistake in their “click here for regional news”. I figured it was so obvious that it’d be picked up quickly by the Herald’s large readership.
5 years later, it’s still there.
So let me explain.
Today, browsing the Herald I came across this story which reminded me of the error.
So the story is correctly tagged “Otago” as it’s in Milburn, which is indeed in Otago.
And the google map shows the same. That dotted line down towards the left of the image is the boundary of the province. As you can see, Clinton & Tapanui are in Otago, Gore is just across the boundary in Southland.
So why does the New Zealand Herald have this? (Approximate location of Milburn marked).
That big wedge shaped discrepancy is the Clutha District. It is not part of Southland any more than Michigan is part of Canada.

What appears to have happened is that some twit has confused the “Clutha-Southland” electorate with the provincial boundaries and no one has ever noticed, or the Herald has refused to correct the error. The latter would be bizzare, since as I’ve pointed out above, stories in south Otago are correctly tagged as such.
