Possum Throwing our new National Sport?

I see that there’s some fuss after some reporter discovered that a rural school was having a possum throwing contest.

Sounds like fun.

The SPCA have weighed in. Not sure why:

a) Possums are a noxious pest. People get paid to kill them. I’ve personally dispatched a few (in my younger days), usually a fewhammer blows to the head works just great. Did I mention they’re a noxious pest? Actually, they’re worse than rabbits, since they carry TB.

b) They’re dead. I’m pretty sure that a dead animal is outside of SPCA’s gambit, since you can actually be cruel to a dead animal.

We actually had a school camp once, and some possoms got smuggled into the girls dorms somehow… probably put there by the fellow who proceeded to do a very detailed (i.e. slow) demonstration of how to skin said animal after they were found! ;)

Then there was an occasion when our boys group was out shooting and chased one up a tree just over the road from a girls camp… ah, good times.

Atually, rabbits are fun too. Once went out shooting and shot a few hundred. We dropped about half off at the farmer’s house. His daughter was disgusted that they had to drive over them to get to church the next day. (apparently they squished a lot!)

Heh.

Suffice to say, I think this sort of namby pampy nonsense may just lead to possum throwing to become our (rural) national sport!

Love this quote though:

“It’s morally wrong to throw a dead animal around. It’s about time that people wake up and smell 2010 and realise that these sorts of things shouldn’t be happening.”

I wonder if he objects to me tossing topside steak into my shopping trolley?

You can see a possum skinning expert in action here. Unfortunately, they only show part of the job. Before you get to this you have to do several actions which draw strong protests from (female) uninitiated onlookers!
