No Right Turn thinks a consistent position is a hypocritical one.
When the government passed the Electoral Finance Act, the right screamed that it was an assault on free speech. Now they’re trying to use it to shut down the stage version of The Hollow Men. Ostensibly, this is being done to “clarify the law”. In [...]

The Electoral Finance Act, rort of rorts, just got that little bit more stupid.
No doubt there’s more to come too.
I’d quote, but everyone’s already seen it all.
What a joke.

Prof. Hodge made a comment at the last Electoral Finance Act protest.
He mentioned this act: the “Political Disabilities Removal Act”. No guesses who’s “Political Disabilities” it removed.
2. Power of certain associations to apply funds in furtherance of
political objects—(1) Subject to the provisions of this section, the
funds of any society may be applied in the [...]

The blasingly odvious has now happened… Andy Moore’s site is now a blog.
Just goes to show how stupid the law is.

Don’tVoteLabour has been shutdown.
Does anyone else see the irony that he cites his lack of wealth as a reason?
After a series of exchanges with the commission, Mr Moore took down the site yesterday, saying he could not afford lawyers’ fees or the potential $10,000 fine if he was prosecuted.
“It would have cost thousands to [...]

In response to my calling out WhaleOil the other day, he’s created a nice poster to put by your front door.
Home, car, give a few to the guy at the Dairy to hand out… let’s do it!

Whaleoil documents the increasing spread of anti-EFA sentiment.
I have received two offers to place billboards on highly strategic sites in differing parts of the country. This made me think.
We can stretch our meagre funds futher if there are people willing to have billboards erected or placed on their buildings in strategic and high profile locations.
We can [...]

Ahem.
I assert that this website is not blog, in spite being on a popular bloging platform, expressing opinions, linking to other blogs etc. Even if you think it’s a blog, it’s highly chimerical with oodles of money literally pouring out of my monitor every time I post.
Any views expressed on [...]

Comment on the Herald forums:
For democracy to work everyone needs to be on a level playing field. This bill tries to set that level playing field by the only way it can - restricting the use of money in political advertising. The only people it’s restricting are the people who can afford to spend $60k [...]

This is so good it must be quoted whole. It must be said again and again - the left are only interested in their own freedom, that and power. If they can give up societies freedoms for power, they will do it and they are.
Do you remember when former Prime Minister Robert Muldoon attempted to [...]

The NY Times reports:
Garry Kasparov, the former chess champion and opposition leader, was arrested Saturday and sentenced to five days in jail after trying to lead a march to the offices of the federal election authorities.
Wow, I didn’t know Russia already had an Electoral Finance Act. Kasparov must have forgotten to put his [...]

The standard certainly sets a low standard. I popped over there today.
As David Farrar has noted, the protest march was joined by a small group of activists in John Key and Mr Burns masks chanting things like “What is it that we support? John Key’s election rort!”,
Except you can only rort an election if you [...]

For those that remember years ago when Zimbabwe started it’s slide, there was a specific point when the rot really set in.
Mugabe, despite being increasingly unpopular, won the parliamentary elections through massive manipulation and intimidation of his opponents. After that “success”, it was only a matter of time before he won enough seats to change [...]

With the EFB being reported back to Parliament, the full MSM’s scrutiny of it has finally started.
And how!
If I were Labour, I’d be thinking one thing: what will that headline look like the day before (or even the day of ) the election if we pass this bill?

The topic of state funding has reared it’s incredibly ugly head today, with DPF pointing out that the government’s moves will bring it in by default.
This might be a good time to point out that only 41 (7%) submissions to the bill asked for it. In case you didn’t guess, the 14 form letters from [...]

During my EFB Submissions survey I made note of submissions where the submitter looked like he/she had actually read the bill. This had to include quoting what the bill actually said and/or a mention of a clause that may have been especially noteworthy to the submitter.
Most submission did not get this checkbox checked, most people [...]

A Mr Norman Fletcher wrote in his submission….
We need to halt the trend towards American style democracy…
That’s interesting, because according to Wikipedia…
The Federal Election Campaign Act 1971 required candidates to disclose sources of campaign contributions and campaign expenditure. It was amended in 1974 to legally limit campaign contributions. It banned direct contributing to campaigns by [...]
