Save the Humans

WhaleOil has found a new blog, “Save the Humans“. Looks like a quality piece of electronic opinionationilism. (Yep, I just made that world up :D)

Here are my fairy lights. What do you think? They are happy smiles from the Earth. The Earth is fine.

But this is spooky. About 8:45 some neighbours rang the doorbell and asked why we had fairy lights up. They were just ‘interested’ and not accusing in any way. Just that their 13 year old son was confused, didn’t we think the Earth was stuffed?

It was the strangest most spooky experience. It was like getting a visit from a local priest who has noticed you have not been to church lately. Slightly uncomfortable, a bit light-hearted, lots of ‘we are just interested but have you read this book…it’s called blah blah and it says that…’.

The son was genuinely confused (presumably after 6 years of environmental indoctrination). It didn’t feel right to be too honest with him (a bit like feeding pork to Muslim perhaps). I just said that I am a terrible optimist.

That’s really the scary thing about environmentalism (and Bush bashing, and even Helen Clark worship to a lesser extent). It’s complete and utter bull, but some people actually believe in it to the point where they just can’t understand that others might not agree with them.

Now, religion is different. I understand that others are Atheists, Muslim etc. Those people may hate me to various degrees, and many think I’m nuts, but they don’t look at me with that blank look when I explain that I believe in Jesus.

But tell certain people the world is fine, or that Bush gave an honest assessment of the danger posed by Iraq (or that he won the 2000 election under the rules)  and you just don’t know what to expect.

Or maybe I’m just biased here. I guess the kid doesn’t get out much past school.
