Freedom

The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep’s throat, for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as a liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act as the destroyer of liberty, especially as the sheep was a black one. Plainly the sheep and the wolf are not agreed upon a definition of the word liberty; and precisely the same difference prevails to—day among us human creatures, even in the North, and all professing to love liberty.

If people are free, they might not give me money to speak for them, and I will be silenced

No sign of balance in this reporting.

The University Students Association is angry a bill giving students a choice of whether or not to join it, is a step closer to becoming law.

The Act Party’s bill is being slammed as irresponsible by the Association’s co-president David Do.

He says it’ll destroy student representation and welfare provisions, and put services like Student Job Search at risk .

He believes the Select Committee has got it wrong, and has ignored students and the tertiary sector.

Mr Do says almost 5,000 submissions were received and over 98% of them were against the Bill. He adds the small fee paid to join the Association supports events such as orientation, clubs and sports.

Very strange tagline I must say – “ACT party go ahead with controvercial student bill” – why on earth would they not, given they introducted it?

But worse, the line makes it sound like ACT have had a good reason to drop it, rather than the actual situation where it has gathered a positive select comittee report and will now probably become law.

Then we come to the NZUSA press release. How about a fisk?

They’re that their members will have the freedom to leave them. Think about that!

Irresponsible – brilliant choice of words, given the subject is Student Associations!

He says it’ll destroy student representation and welfare provisions, and put services like Student Job Search at risk .

Actually, it won’t destroy those things, it’ll destroy the ridiculous claim that the associations provide them. How can you represent people who would leave you if given the chance?

He believes the Select Committee has got it wrong, and has ignored students and the tertiary sector.

Translation: they didn’t listen to all the students associations who put in self-interested submissions, even when instructed to do otherwise by their membership.

Gee, why would they do that?

Mr Do says almost 5,000 submissions were received and over 98% of them were against the Bill. He adds the small fee paid to join the Association supports events such as orientation, clubs and sports.

One wonders where the figure of 5000 comes from. A search on the government website reveals 530 documents, and this website puts the number of submitters at 482.

One guess that the difference is that the remainder are from associations’ postcard/form letter campaigns. However, there are many of these still in the list so one can only speculate as to the difference.

However, it’s true – there are many people who wrote in and repeated the talking points of the associations. They expressed full support for their local association (one I read even announced that after 6 years, he still had no idea what they did – as though that was a good thing!) and I’m sure left the committee in no doubt that associations would have widespread support from large numbers of students should they go voluntary.

In other words, all the association proved in their campaign was that they were lying, and would actually have no trouble maintaining close to their current level of membership.

Oops.

Maybe they should have forgone the campaign, and just pointed out that they were incompetent, unresponsive to their members and corrupt? At least that tactic would have been more honest.
