From the Herald.
Even the well-off are faced with a lifetime of renting, locked out of homeownership by escalating house prices, a report released by property consultants DTZ today shows.
I accept that buying a house in Auckland City (or North Shore) is expensive, and now too expensive for most. However, a couple with joint incomes should be able to afford a nice house in many nice areas – if they applied themselves to saving a deposit.
Most couples starting out should be able to afford a Central city apartment. Most should also be able to afford something in the outer reaches of the city.
And of course, most places outside of Auckland don’t have a problem at all.
Or those who owned a house before 2003.
But fear not, the Government will save us all with some massive, crazy scheme that involves pouring zillions of dollars into something.
