I was thinking about a previous post I wrote. So much is being taken away from children these days. Girls don’t get much of a chance to just be girls and not worry about the teenage pressures till they get to that age. Pressures to conform and look/act older than they are, are coming from everywhich way. While parents are busy keeping up with the Jones’, kids are expected to keep up as well. We are sucked in by media advertising all to readily. The glossy junk-mail that we wish wasn’t so frequent beckons us to take a look and view the great bargains – the things kids don’t need yet – if ever! – but must have now because that’s what the shops are selling and that’s what everyone else is buying for their kids. The reality is that it will go beyond materialistic things that we can buy to the things that money can’t buy unless we earn a Brittney Spears salary (and I have no idea what she earns). It will include things like wanting to be thinner, have a different body shape, different nose, perfect skin… maybe less mirrors in the house could be a start. And less magazines of people that in one issue look like they have it all, but in the next issue: She tells all: her anxieties exclusively revealed! In the end nobody is perfect. We don’t need to try and make our kids perfect by keeping them up to date with what ever the latest fashion might be. Little girls have pretty ears without the need for earrings (pierced ears do absolutely nothing for little girls, or boys for that matter!). They will thank us later for boundaries and rules eg not till you’re 15. And we just need to communicate more positive words by telling our kids they are beautiful no matter what everyone else in society might be saying. The following vid is good and the lyrics below sum it all up.
BeautifulDisaster – Jon Mclaughlin
She loves her mama’s lemonade
And hates the sound that goodbye’s make
She prays one day she’ll find someone to need her
She swears that there’s no difference
Between the lies and compliments
It’s all the same if everybody leaves her
And every magazine tells her she’s not good enough
The pictures that she sees make her cry
She would change everything, everything, just ask her
Caught in the in-between a beautiful disaster
She just needs someone to take her home
She’s given boys what they want
And tries to act nonchalant
Afraid they’ll see that she’s lost her direction
She never stays the same for long
Assuming that she’ll get it wrong
Perfect only in her imperfection
She’s not a drama queen
She doesn’t want to feel this way
Only 17 but tired
She would change everything, for happy ever after
Caught in the in-between a beautiful disaster
She just needs someone to take her home
She’s just the way she is but no one’s told her that’s okay
She would change everything, everything, just ask her
Caught in the in-between a beautiful disaster
She would change everything, for happy ever after
Caught in the in-between a beautiful disaster
She just needs someone to take her home
She just needs someone to take her home
