The Swiss Ban on Minarets

Interesting to see some of the local response to the ban in Switzerland. DPF:

This is simply a horrendous decision. Freedom of religion is a fundamental human right, and should not be at the whim of referenda.

No Right Turn.

This is an outright attack on freedom of religion, specifically the freedom of Muslims to build religious buildings, and if it was reversed and applied to e.g. church spires, people would instantly recognise this.

Here’s an Islamic cleric talking about why churches should not be allowed in Islamic countries. I don’t see any hint on his Wikipedia page that this guy is out of step with Islamic leadership (and I read elsewhere he has a following numbering in the millions), but feel free to correct me.

  1. What an idiot. I’d like to see “No Right Turn” start a church building in countries other than the Western ‘Christian’ nations.

  2. Well, you’ve got to be careful. There are plenty of countries where it’s fairly easy to build churches. However, there are places where it’s not, like Saudi.

I’ve heard in Egypt that they use an attrition strategy – they won’t even allow repair meaning that all churches will eventually fall apart.

I can see both sides of the Swiss situation, and I’m unconvinced that the ban is a good thing, but I’m far from convinced that it’s 100% bad either.

  3. I don’t support the ban either, but just commenting on “if it was reversed … people would instantly recognise this.” Because the ban on building churches is real in many places and has been in place for a long time.
