Racism is (now) showing someone who has a race

When people talk about PC thinking destroying the world, they’re talking about things like this.

In an unusual move, Bank of Canada Governor has Mark Carney apologised for bank note changes that prompted critics to accuse the central bank of racism.

The initial design for the new C$100 note featured a picture of an Asian woman but this was scrapped after focus groups expressed concern Asians should not be the only ethnic group represented.

When the bill was released into circulation last year, the Asian woman had been removed and replaced by a woman who looked to be Caucasian, prompting complaints from Chinese groups and media commentators.

In the bank’s first formal apology in nearly a decade, Carney said the Bank had never intended bank notes to feature people who represented only one ethnic group.

“I apologise to those who were offended. The Bank’s handling of this issue did not meet the standards Canadians justifiably expect of us,” he said in a statement.

If that’s not evidence that PC thinking is screwing up people’s brains, I don’t know what is.

Also, in other idiotic news

A family ordered to leave their late mother’s state house says government agencies paid her benefit and collected her rent for four months after she died.

Northland man Raymond Dunn said his mother Rina Dunn’s Work and Income benefit ceased only weeks ago.

The family is still occupying the Whangarei house in defiance of a chain of eviction notices served by Housing New Zealand since Mrs Dunn died on March 21.

Until two weeks before the last deadline of August 13, the rent was being paid from Mrs Dunn’s benefit, which Work and Income had not cut off, Mr Dunn said.

He was disgusted that the Government could pay as well as take his late mother’s benefit for that length of time, he said.

Get that? He’s disgusted that he received money he was not entitled to, and probably broke the law to receive. It’s illegal to not inform WINZ of a change of circumstances, yet here is an entire family having a go at the authorities for paying it (I think, honestly it’s hard to know really).

Quite how they could be disgusted that the government took money for rent is beyond me. It’s not like they had moved out – quite the opposite, they’re refusing.

I note that they were kicked out today. No word on whether the police will investigate the government for failing to act on not being given information, or failing to stop charging rent for a house that was being lived in.

Police Enforce Law

Well, here’s an origial story – Police actually enforcing the law when it’s been flagrantly broken.

Apparently the idiots who hate the law also hate law enforcement.

Police are making no apologies for using undercover officers on the University of Otago campus and say they will continue doing so.

Posters with pictures of plain-clothed officers working on campus and labelled “Narks in our Class?” and “Narkiology 101. How to spot a nark” appeared around the university on Monday.

One poster shows plain-clothed officers involved in the recent arrest of three people at a National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (Norml) stand at a Otago University Students Association market day.

The other shows plain-clothed officers at a regular protest “smoke-up” on campus.

Gee, they have a regular, public law breaking session. I guess that might have tipped the police off somehow. Hm, I wonder what sort of person would attend such an event?

Police were running an operation to stop offences against the Misuse of Drugs Act on the university campus and, to date, as a result, had issued nine trespass notices to non-students and three to people enrolled at the university.

Those trespassers included known drug dealers, gang members or associates and one secondary school pupil.

Well, sounds like the “protests” were attracting the best people.

Insp Campbell said trespass notices were issued by police acting as an agent of the university.

The 12 people issued with trespass notices had a total of 26 charges pending before the courts for a variety of drug and other offences.

Just a few minor charges then?

Loved this quote.

He said the posters had probably been put together because students felt uncomfortable being under surveillance on campus.

Clearly he doesn’t get it that some students might be even more uncomfortable having regular “protest” at which students flout the law and attract drug dealers and gang members.

Campuses are meant to be a safe environment. Clearly there are tow very different ideas of “safe” here.

Update: Home Paddock reports this is nothing new.

There’s nothing new about undercover cops on campus – a friend flatted with one when I was a student more than 30 years ago. He was doing a fulltime course and made no secret of the fact he was being paid while doing it and so was still a policeman.

This makes my blood boil

This story really makes my blood boil.

“A pair of hoax ads on Craigslist cost an Oregon man much of what he owned.

The ads popped up Saturday afternoon, saying the owner of a Jacksonville home was forced to leave the area suddenly and his belongings, including a horse, were free for the taking, said Jackson County sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Colin Fagan.

But Robert Salisbury had no plans to leave. The independent contractor was at Emigrant Lake when he got a call from a woman who had stopped by his house to claim his horse.

On his way home he stopped a truck loaded down with his work ladders, lawn mower and weed eater.

“I informed them I was the owner, but they refused to give the stuff back,” Salisbury said. “They showed me the Craigslist printout and told me they had the right to do what they did.”

Salisbury lost most of his property to numerous people, although he was able to take down the license plates of some. Apparently most of the people who took items were convinced they had the right to take the items because of the notices they saw on Craigslist.

Fancy walking up to a fellow and stating flatly that you can take all his stuff just because you saw an ad placed on the Internet. How can a stupid ad override the fact that the owner is telling you to your fact that it’s false?  He’s telling you you’re stealing, and you do it anyway.

One more sign that people are more concerned about their legal rights than their moral obligations, and that they don’t know the former much better than the latter.

Shock Horror! New Competition for Trade Me

Xtra reports this disturbing development.

For Pete’s sake this is getting stupid.

Every week now it seems there’s some new guy who thinks he’s going to setup to challenge Trade Me. Better Software, more features.

When will these idiots realise it’s about market share and momentum. Trade Me owns the New Zealand internet, with most traffic in this country going to it. With that clout, who would go to a compeditor? Why go sell your stuff on a site with say, 100 hits per week? Even if you gave away your services, you’ll still be out of pocket through less competition on your auctions.
