The Assumptions behind MMP have changed

I agree completely with Queen Bee

Unfortunately MMP was introduced at a time when one could assume that there was no, or very little corruption in New Zealand politics and that freedom of speech would be allowed to continue. We assumed that a minor party would not use its position in Government to force through policies that would be feathering the nest of wealthy individuals in narrow sectors, in return for donations. We also assumed that Prime Ministers would not allow New Zealand’s international reputation to be tarnished by a minor party leader just for the sake of maintaining a minority. We, of course, have seen that this was a false assumption. And of course we are now not allowed to speak our minds as freely thanks to the EFA. But should this mean an end to MMP? No, we say. But it does mean the enforcement of our electoral laws is important, and it means a new, totally independent commission to investigate and stamp out corruption is essential.

The Hive – Right or Center?

The Hive:

We have been challenged to justify our view that we are not “right wing”.

We are not aligned politically. To our knowledge none of The Hive team are members of any political party. QB certainly insn’t a member of any party.

We fight policy not people (slight exception as far as Winston is concerned).

We have probably praised the PM, Goff and some other Ministers as regularly – or more regularly – than we have any figures in National. Likewise we do not hesitated to criticise National should we disagree with a policy proposal.

Since when is supporting orthodox economic policy right wing?

Um, like, forever!

Seriously though, there’s no way the Hive is a Left wing blog – the first qualification for that is that you have to be (more than) a few short, making claims like “having a referendum is anti-democracy” or constantly ranting about Bush’s no-brainer decision to kick some despotic and/or terrorist  arse.

Well, that’s my observation.

The Hive in contrast, consistently provides great analysis of current topics without one feeling for those under-funded mental health services.

One thing though guys, you’re slipping. You need to get away from those one liner posts, give us some more original content.
