    Your site is gaining more and more attention – rightly so.

    I actually checked a few this morning, as there’s a few surprises that I did not expect. I guess having the Tumeke rankings emphasizes the differences.

    I was going to say something in my post, but I will say that I only spent a couple of hours doing this last night.

    Tim spends many more hours than that, and from my playing around here, and looking at the different problems involved, I’m starting to appreciate just how much work he puts in!

    Thankyou for your kind comments. It will be interesting to see how our site fares when it has the full 6 months worth of technorati authority – currently we only have 2 months worth on our new domain and of course are being compared against everyone else’s 6 months worth.

    I tend to think it might be nice for the statisticians to add the two domains technorati scores together for accuracy during the transition period but unless you knew a site had changed addresses you would miss a few most likely. The best solution would be for Technorati to provide this service but alas, whilst they acknowledge the problem they do not appear to be about to do anything about it.

    I have just published the Shadow Report on the Top 10 Christian Blogs in NZ based on your stats.

    It is an interesting comparison as pretty much all of them improved on your stats/their Nov effort.

    Put up Thy Sword does the skyrocket climb this time round, though Contra Celsum, Samuel Dennis and MandM also made fairly big leaps upwards all well.

    Bill – no nothing needs installed. Because it’s a ranking system not a traffic system being at the 3,000,000 mark will mean that you get a lot of fluctuation as there isn’t much difference in traffic between a 2,000,000 ranked blog and a 3,000,000 ranked blog. It also depends on how popular other blogs are in comparison.

    Interesting, you`d have thought that a blog with more traffic gets a higher placing than blogs with less traffic, but not here…. Not sure how that works

    Seems like they key factor in your placing was your NZ rank – there are 8 sites that had a lower general rank, but all had a higher nz rank.

    I supply Tim with traffic figures from my Statcounter account. That’s got to be better than a ranking that depends on getting visits from people who have installed Alexa’s browser plug-in (or whatever it is).

    Not many of my readers seem to use Alexa: hence the difference – #66 here as opposed to #25 on traffic.

    But what the heck, keep up the good work!

    Since the 16th I’ve been running an experiment with the Alexa ranking system to look at the site sensitivity in rankings from a single person using it. This is one of the factors used by Tumeke and Halfdone’s rankings. I was interested in how much it affected the Alexa ranking. It has been enlightening…

    None of the other admins use this because of its tracking behaviors or they run Safari. The Standard’s score on this ranking had remained moderately static – from Tumuke nz blog ranking
    October 226k nz451
    September 221k nz338
    August 236k nz388

    So I added it to all of my firefox’s on the evening of the 15th at home including my work laptop.

    Now I spend considerable time pulling pages from The Standard because of the nature of the moderation task – the vast majority of which are admin comment pages. I also have two other page view measures in wordpress.stats and google analytics. Both exclude the admin pages in wordpress.

    The google analytics and wordpress.stats showed a steadily decreasing number of page views, as would be expected post-election and as we move into summer.

    Alexa now shows a traffic rank of 191k and nz266 rank. As far as I’m aware there have been no other readers starting to use this that read the standard. The rapid decrease started when I started to do my usual operations with alexa running after months of compatitive stability. This happened in about 3 weeks.

    It looks to me as if a single person using this can significantly change the traffic ranks at alexa from the sites that they look at. Looks like a good tool to rort the system, especially for a admin of a site who spends a lot of time on their own site.

    It does explain a lot of the stepwise changes in the ranking that I’ve seen that do not appear to relate to measured page views. It looks like there are so few alexa users in NZ, that even one reading the site can change the alexa ranks of a site that they read quitre considerably.

    I’ll post this over at Tumeke and Halfdone. I suspect that there may be a lot more users of alexa shortly.
